Vladimir Kagan (1927-2016) was born in Germany and grew up in the United States. Vladimir Kagan was a pioneering American furniture designer whose sensual, sculptural forms helped define mid-century modern aesthetics. Born in Germany, Kagan emigrated to the United States, where he studied architecture at Columbia University before turning to furniture design.

He began his career working in his father’s woodworking shop, absorbing the discipline of traditional craftsmanship, which he would later fuse with avant-garde innovation. In 1949, he opened his first showroom in New York City, where his bold, curvaceous creations quickly gained a following among the cultural elite.

Kagan’s designs are instantly recognizable for their organic silhouettes, cantilevered forms, and seamless integration of wood, glass, and upholstery. His signature pieces — like the Serpentine Sofa — are famous for their ability to blend functionality with poetic form.

Collectors, celebrities and architects alike have sought his work. His furniture continues to be featured in the world’s most prestigious interiors. His legacy is one of timeless elegance, futurism, and a commitment to craftsmanship.

Today, Vladimir Kagan’s pieces are icons of collectible design.
